Yes, Virginia, the Boogerman does exist. No, I’m not referring to some mythical creature like the Loch Ness Monster, or Bigfoot, but a real person who actually lived in the Great Smoky Mountains. Legend has it that on Robert Palmer's first day of school the teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Palmer nervously replied "the Boogerman". The name would stick with him into adulthood. Today the former Cataloochee resident has a trail named after him, which passes through the site of his old homestead.
