Cold Springs Shelter Reopens

The USDA Forest Service today announced that Cold Springs Shelter on the Appalachian Trail (AT) has been reopened. The shelter was closed in mid-September for repairs.

The Nantahala Hiking Club repaired the bottom seal and footers to add stability to the shelter.

Cold Springs Shelter, located 1.3 miles north of Burningtown Gap, serves as a rest area for hikers of the AT. The shelter was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s using chestnut tree logs.

The shelter is located on the Nantahala Ranger District, Nantahala National Forest. For more information about the Nantahala National Forest, click here.
